While most of my school stories repeat year after year with just new names, this particular incident is a first, thus the blog!
Thursday morning the students were coming in to class for 1st hour. One of my students, Olivia, walked into the room talking to someone I didn't recognize. It seemed harmless so I didn't pay much attention, but being the teacher that I am, I couldn't NOT listen when out of the ordinary things happen in my room. This is what I heard.
Boy with Olivia, "We're friends, right?"
Olivia, "Yeah, sure."
Boy, "Good. I like friends. You're wearing tights. Can I touch your tights?"
Olivia with a bewildered look on her face said, "Um, sure."
(at least he asked, right?)
Boy bends down to touch her close to the ankle. In what seemed like a blink of an eye Boy was laying on the floor with his arms wrapped around her legs and his cheek pressed up against her shin. Olivia's face told it all. She was so uncomfortable but didn't know how to deal with the situation. I could tell from Boy's behavior that he is part of the Special Needs program that shares the hallways with the Math Department.
With this action by Boy, it was time for Teacher to step in. By now the tardy bell had rung and I needed to start class, but needed this boy to find his way to his classroom. So I went up to him and asked him his name. "Gary" Ok, now I had a name.
"Gary, the tardy bell has rung. It's time to go to class." This brought Gary off the floor and standing. He turned to Olivia.
"We're friends. I'll call you."
"Sure." I could tell by the way she answered that she has never given Gary her number. Gary then proceeded to SING his OWN phone number to all of us.
Teacher: "Who's your teacher?"
Gary: "Ms. Ginis"
With that I had my confirmation. Ms. Ginis is indeed a Special Ed teacher. In fact, she teaches the Autism group of kids. Her class is called self-contained because she has the kids most of the day except for a few electives.
I started to walk Gary to class and he turned to me and said, "I know where my room is. Bye."
I walked back into the room and we all had a good laugh. I've talked with Olivia, no major damage was done. She will definitely think twice about saying yes when someone asks if they can touch her tights.
