CA 2013 Trip Days 1-3?

Yes, there is a question mark on the title...on purpose.  Is Sunday day 2 or 3 of my vacation? You read through my reasoning and let me know what you think.

Glen and I were scheduled to take the 9:05 pm flight out of Phoenix on Southwest on Friday June 21.  If you remember, this was the evening Southwest Airlines had a nation-wide computer outage.  That is why most of my story happened. Here's what happened.

I was slightly stressed about getting me, Glen, the stroller, and two bags to the ticket counter to get them checked in, seeing as how I only have two hands.  Plus, I think Ammon wanted to spend more time with us before we left for 3.5 weeks, so Ammon decided to cough up the money for parking and he helped us get our bags to the ticket counter and then got a pass to go through security with us and hang out while we waited.  We checked the flight status at 5pm and the flight was already showing a 15 minute delay, so we didn't rush to the airport.  When we got there, we got through the ticket counter and security without a problem.  We found the gate and got comfortable.  Glen proceeded to charm everyone around us.  He's such a good baby.  Ammon was enjoying being with him and walked around the terminal and watched the planes taxi around the airport.  When he got fussy we fed him a bottle.  I tried to get the gate check tag for the stroller, but the computers where down.  Eventually they came back on and I got my tag for the stroller.  Glen fell asleep about 8:30pm after we were told that the flight was delayed until the computers come back on.  We waited and waited.  Ammon finally decided that paying for parking was getting a bit expensive and he left about 9:15pm.  When the flight at the gate next to us boarded, we were hopeful that we would be next.  However, about 10:15pm, the guy came over the loud speaker and said that our flight to San Jose was canceled.  The line at the ticket counter instantly got long and the woman at the door to the gate went down the ramp and retrieved the stroller for me.

Oh yeah, the plane I was supposed to board was sitting at the gate waiting for the computers to be up and running.  They couldn't put anyone on the plane because they couldn't electronically scan the tickets.  The flight had come from Houston and still had about 15 people on it waiting for us to board and leave.  These people were allowed to leave the plane to get food.  When they canceled the flight, these people came off the plane.

We learned that there were multiple reasons why my flight got canceled.  There is a sound curfew in San Jose and planes can't fly into or out of San Jose after 11 pm without being fined.  How much money, I don't know.  But the other reason my flight got canceled was because once we had sat at the airport for so long, the 1st officer on our flight had timed out and there was no one to replace him making the flight impossible to happen.

Ok, so the line was long and I called Ammon to let him know I might be coming home and my parents to let them know I might be coming the next day.  While on the phone with my dad, the guy at the counter made an announcement saying that a flight to Oakland out of a different gate was taking stand by passengers.  I asked my dad if he would be willing to pick me up there.  He said he would, so I booked it over to the other gate, which was about a quarter of a mile down the airport.  Since I wasn't in line at my old gate, I was one of the first ones in line at the new gate.  There were so many sympathetic people there who took one look at my cute baby and were very kind to me.

I got on the stand-by list that was being written by hand, since the computers were still having issues.  Since this post is getting long, I will summarize a bit. We got free sodas and snacks around 11:30 or midnight. The caffeine was much needed! Glen slept for only an hour since Ammon left, but he was in pretty good spirits.  Ammon was in the cell-phone lot waiting with Aunt Ivy to see if I was going to make the flight.  I was pretty sure I was going to make the flight, so they eventually left and went home.  About 12:30 the confirmed passengers started boarding the flight and they stand-by passengers were called.  I eventually got on the plane and felt much more relaxed.  I didn't realize it then, but I was pretty stressed out about the whole thing.  Even now I have some pent up energy about the situation.

Our flight took off at about 1:15am.  I was so fortunate that the flight ended up not getting completely full and the middle seat in my row was empty.  Glen ended up sitting there for a bit.  He was great on the flight. Hardly any crying and eventually fell asleep about 2:15am.  My parents picked us up in Oakland at 3 am.  My bags did not make it. I knew they wouldn't.  When they canceled the San Jose flight, some people decided to stay the night in a hotel and all our bags were sent to the baggage claim.  The TSA people who screen the bags leave at 10pm, so there was no one there to work with the bags to get them our the new flight.

With the drive home from Oakland and trying to get a now awake baby back to sleep, I did not get to sleep until 5 am.  I was quite tired.  I'm glad Glen slept until 8:15.  We had a lazy morning.

Baby Glen got to meet his Uncle Derek! They bonded pretty quickly.  Glen fell asleep on him about 11.  Too cute!

I tried calling Southwest to see where my bags were, but the only information I could get was what I got on Friday night: the bags would be sent to my original destination on the earliest flight on Saturday morning.  So we went about 11:15am to see if they were there.  They were!! It was the easiest bag pickup. There weren't any flights picking up bags at the time and there was no line of people trying to pick up bags!

We then headed back to Morgan Hill and had lunch at Super Taqueria!! Yummy!!

After lunch we picked up some fresh fruit! I totally miss being able to to that! We headed home for naps! Glen took a really long nap at we had to wake him up at 5:15pm so he could still have a decent bed time.

Does Friday-Saturday count as Day 1 or Day 1 and Day 2?? Leave me a comment and let me know!
Sunday! We went to church and saw lots of friends! Great times!
He still loves bath time! He's just so cute!

First time being on his tummy during his bath. This is because he is now in a big tub and not his little tub.  See previous post about this! He's having so much with grandma's  water toys!!
